The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has been an integral part of the S. Nijalingappa Institute of Dental Sciences & Research since its establishment in 1986. Over the decades, our department has evolved continuously, embracing advancements in technology and innovation to provide state-of-the-art treatment to our patients.

Today, we stand as a landmark institution in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgical care in Bangalore — a reputation reflected in the volume and diversity of cases managed by our department. We are committed to clinical excellence, contemporary education, and ethical patient care, ensuring comprehensive satisfaction for all those we serve.

We have a distinguished record in managing a broad spectrum of maxillofacial pathologies, including cancers, cysts, tumors, and infections. Our association with the KIMS Hospital casualty wing enables us to deliver primary care for maxillofacial trauma cases, including emergencies. Our faculty consists of experienced and dedicated surgeons, well-versed in the management of midfacial and mandibular trauma.

With a daily outpatient load of 30–40 patients, the department provides opportunities for minor surgical procedures to be performed by undergraduate and postgraduate students under expert supervision. Undergraduate students undergo a structured training program where they gain foundational surgical skills and a firsthand look into the specialty of oral surgery, potentially guiding their future postgraduate aspirations.

Our postgraduate program is intensive and comprehensive, designed to build expertise from basic extractions to complex surgical interventions in the operating theater. Postgraduate students also undergo clinical rotations in departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, ENT, and Plastic Surgery — ensuring holistic exposure and competence.

In recognition of our consistent quality of care and academic standards, our institution was among the first to be granted permission by the Dental Council of India (DCI) to initiate the Postgraduate Diploma course in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
